These roadside establishments offered shelter, food, storage facilities, and protection for both travelers and their animals. Many were built along routes connecting major commercial centers, particularly in regions where journeys across deserts, mountains, or sparsely populated areas could be dangerous. Their courtyards allowed merchants to unload goods, tend to pack animals, and exchange information with people arriving from distant places. In addition to facilitating trade, caravanserais helped ideas, languages, and cultural practices move between communities. A merchant carrying textiles might learn about unfamiliar customs, while another transporting spices could share news about political changes in a distant kingdom. Some establishments also included workshops, small shops, or spaces for religious activities, making them more than temporary shelters. Their location and design often reflected the economic priorities of the rulers or merchants who financed them. As transportation networks changed and railways and modern roads reduced the need for traditional caravan routes, many caravanserais lost their original function. Nevertheless, surviving examples provide valuable evidence of how infrastructure supported commercial exchange and encouraged contact between societies long before modern transport systems emerged.
